Tera Napier is the Executive Director at Sherman Thomas Charter Schools in Madera, California. During her 21 years guiding the K-8 program she has seen STCS ride a continuous wave of academic improvement to become the highest-performing school in the city of Madera, as well as a 2014 California Distinguished School. Her efforts have also created the foundation for two additional schools – Sherman Thomas Charter High School and the Sherman Thomas STEM Academy. Her success and expertise have distinguished her as one of the leading school choice advocates and school leaders in the Central Valley.
Tera began her career in education as a teacher and coach in the Clovis Unified School District. At Clovis High School, she worked with the most diverse student population in the district – both in her role as a physical education teacher and varsity volleyball coach.
She then took those leadership skills she gained in Clovis and returned to her hometown of Madera to help launch Sherman Thomas Charter School. Working alongside the executive director, she served as both a classroom teacher and administrator in the school’s formative first year. Beginning in year three, she took over the role of sole school leader and administrator – creating an innovative academic program and fostering immense parental and community involvement. Under her leadership, Sherman Thomas quickly ascended to the top performing elementary school in all of Madera – all the while maintaining greater diversity than all of the other schools with similar academic achievement.
Recently Tera has served as an integral part of the 99 Accelerator – a collaborative effort among five of the top charter schools in the Central Valley that focuses on spreading best practices and scaling charter reform efforts in the Central Valley. The peer-to-peer network has been so successful that Tera has been invited to speak at various conferences and host multiple visiting groups that are interested in replicating the work of the group.
Hi, my name is Dawniele Oliphant, and I am the Principal at STCS. I believe in creating lifelong learners by nurturing the whole child through academics, music, art, sports, and emotional support. I have been in education for 21 years. I have a multiple subject credential, a Master’s in Education, and an Administrative credential. On the weekends and holidays, I love spending time with my family, backpacking, paddleboarding, and sitting on the beach.
Hello Sherman Thomas Family
My name is Ms. Maciel. I have been teaching at Sherman Thomas since 2016. I love the sense of community and the parent involvement at our school and I believe those are a few of the many things that sets us apart from the rest of the public schools.
Teaching is my passion and I love what I do. I strive to create an engaging classroom where students feel safe and look forward to come to every day. If you ever visit our 2nd grade classroom, you’ll witness students sharing, repeating after me or learning little chants or songs that go along with what we are learning; mostly during language arts and math. I believe students learn from repetition, and you’ll see us doing plenty of that.
Out of all the many things I like to do; dancing, and hiking are my favorite. Another of my favorite things are coming to work and receiving the hugs of so many Littles whose lives I’m so lucky to be a part of and touch in whatever small way I can.
I’m Lovina Arter, an elementary school teacher with a passion for nurturing young minds. I hold a degree in child development and one in education. I have been creating engaging learning experiences for students for 19 years here at Sherman Thomas, please another 15 years in the Head Start program. In my free time, I enjoy reading, painting, needlecraft, and running.
I’m Bresha LaMattina, I am a Kindergarten school teacher with a passion for nurturing young minds. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and I have a Master of Education in Inspired Teaching and Learning with an emphasis in Social and Emotional Learning. I love creating engaging learning experiences for students while they are in my classroom. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my two amazing children, reading, outdoor adventures, and my dogs.

Hello, I’m Yvette Moraga, the 5th-grade teacher at STCS. I’m originally from San Jose, California, but I’ve called Madera my home since my senior year in high school. A proud graduate of Fresno State – Go Dogs! My journey into teaching led me to MUSD, where I had the joy of working while my own kids attended STCS. The warmth of the community and the rewarding experiences prompted me to join the STCS family officially.
Being a part of STCS allows me to make a meaningful impact on students, and I consider it an honor to contribute to the school’s close-knit community. My inspiration for teaching stems from my faith and family, serving as powerful motivators in my life. I feel truly blessed to be an AGGIE and to have the opportunity to shape young minds at STCS.
I’m Lisa Rider. I have been with Sherman Thomas since 2006 and I am the Intervention teacher and I hold a degree in education. I believe all kids can learn in their own way and in their own time once we help them unlock their learning styles and what works better for them. I also believe that creating relationships and trust with our students is the key to unlocking their success! In my free time, I enjoy being at the races with my grandchildren, gardening, and home improvement.

Principal and 8th Grade Teacher, Sherman Thomas STEM Academy
I’m proud to be the co-founder and principal of the Sherman Thomas STEM Academy, a 6th-8th grade middle school with a STEM focus and college and career emphasis. After completing my B.A. at Fresno Pacific University, I earned my multiple subject and single subject mathematics teaching credentials as well as my administrative credential. I worked at STCS for 10 years (as the 8th grade teacher and vice principal) and STCHS for 3 years (as the math teacher and vice principal). I’m excited to have brought this new school choice to my hometown. It’s a school created by and run by teachers – dreamed up by years of “If I had a school I would…” We opened in 2017 and have had great successes in our short time – due to the dedication of our staff, commitment of the parents, and the hard work and buy-in from the kids. STA is unlike any school I’ve ever seen, and I think it’s awesome!
I love teaching. My goal is to create a positive safe learning environment where students are engaged and challenged through high expectations and a lot of laughter. My students must be ready for high school by the time they leave us, and I take that responsibility very seriously. I have come to the point where I have been teaching in middle school more than half my life. It’s a great age and I love it!
I love helping kids navigate the bridge from childhood to “adulting” and supporting parents who are experiencing that shift on the home front. This middle school stage is all about looking outside of ourselves, noticing what others are doing or needing, and stepping up to ask for help or to assist when possible. Our program balances academic goals with social/emotional growth goals, and because we are a small school, we see kids working at these goals even when they don’t see it themselves.
My goal in the classroom is to create a safe environment with equitable opportunities for every student to feel connected, loved, motivated to learn, and supported to succeed in a rigorous program. I enjoy collaborating with all stakeholders to empower all students to reach their highest potential. I immigrated to Madera at the age of eight and was welcomed and guided academically, personally, and professionally for many years thereafter by wonderful educators. This early positive interaction has been my model for building connections in the classroom.

Sherman Thomas Academy (STA) staff would like to meet you! We have set time aside each month for stakeholders to meet with STA staff. These meetings will be held once a month, on different days, to try to accommodate various schedules. They will last about 1 hour – providing time for sharing between you and us, while not taking up too much time so everyone can get back to their lives! We want to hear your feedback – what’s going well and areas where we can improve. These important meetings are also where we will share updates on our Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and get input on future plans. All stakeholders are invited to attend these monthly chats, which include but are not limited to parents/family members and community members. We would encourage you to attend as many of these as possible to allow us to get your feedback and to share exciting ideas, as well as concerns.
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.
